JIMMY MIRIKITANI
Jimmy Tsutomu Mirikitani passed away on Sunday October 21, 2012. He was 92 years old. True to his word, he continued making art until his final days. In July 2012, he revisited his birthplace in Sacramento, put flowers on his sister's grave in Seattle, and returned to Tule Lake one last time. That summer he also attended exhibitions of his art and screenings of the film in Denver and Santa Fe. WHERE CAN I SEE JIMMY MIRIKITANI’S ART?
Jimmy Mirikitani had his first one-man exhibition at Seattle's Wing Luke Asian Museum in 2006. This exhibit then travelled to Bainbridge Island, NYU's A/PA/ Institute, Portland's Nikkei Legacy Center, and the East Meadow Public Library. His work was exhibited in 2010 at the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery as part of The Art of Gaman: Arts and Crafts from the Japanese American Internment Camps 1942 - 1946. (The Art of Gaman ); the show has since traveled across the USA and to Japan. A new exhibit of Mirikitani's work opened in July 2012 in Santa Fe, New Mexico at Eight Modern Gallery and they continue to represent his work.
WHERE CAN I BUY JIMMY MIRIKITANI’S ART? Reproductions of Mirikitani's art are now available at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles and Wing Luke Asian Museum in Seattle.
